Tears of the May
Tears of the May is a dance play which was directed by Wha-suk, Kim, a professor teaching Modern dance in Won-kwang University in Korea. This dance play is about a historical accident-Kwang-ju democratization movement which was a tragedy of Korean history. The director, herself is one of the victim in that time. through her own experience, she expressed her feeling with an dance. Collaborating with her, I recomposed it in the screen based media in 1999. It was first attempt to put a dance play in the screen based media in Korea.
Kim Wha-suk
Kim Wha-suk (b Kwangju, S. Korea, 2 Dec. 1949). Korean dancer, choreographer, and director. She studied ballet at school and modern dance at Ewha Women's University, joining the Yook Wan-soon Dance Company (1969-76). In 1971 she co-founded her own company with Kim Bock-hee for which they co-choreographed many works, including For My Friend in the Sky (mus. Milhaud, 1984). In 1985 she also founded the SAPPHO Modern Dance Company, for which she created To You Revived in our Heart (mus. Mozart, 1996), among other works. She has taught at several universities and in 1989 founded the Korean Dance Education Society for which she has subsequently acted as president.
